Short course
Advanced Excel for finance
Finance is practised on spreadsheets, everywhere and at every level: a cash flow plan, a budget, a business plan, an investment appraisal, a loan repayment schedule. Yet most financial files you come across are fragile: assumptions buried in formulas, hard-coded figures, no way of testing a scenario, and a sign error that distorts an entire decision.

By the end of the programme, you will be able to
- Build a structured financial model, with isolated assumptions and traceable calculations
- Build a detailed annual budget and track variances between planned and actual
- Build a monthly cash flow plan and anticipate financing needs
- Prepare a projected income statement and balance sheet that are consistent with each other
- Calculate and interpret net present value, internal rate of return and payback period
- Build a loan repayment schedule and compare financing offers
- Calculate a cost of capital and a break-even point
- Carry out a sensitivity analysis and build scenarios
- Calculate the essential financial ratios and comment on them honestly
- Build a readable financial dashboard for a management committee
- Use artificial intelligence to write, explain and audit financial formulas
- Produce the executive summary of a financing file from your own model
Who it is for
Target audience
The module is for people who produce or defend financial figures: administrative and finance managers, management controllers, accountants moving into management, loan officers and analysts in financial institutions, entrepreneurs and project leaders, cooperative managers, programme officers who build budgets, finance and management students.
Prerequisites
Two requirements:
- Know the basic financial concepts: expenses, revenue, profit, cash, investment
- Have a laptop, or rent one from the centre for the duration of the module
Participants are invited to bring a real project, a budget or a financing application in preparation: the model built in class is their own.

- Final exercise: finalise your model, produce your executive summary and present it to the group
- Presentation of attestations
Assessment and certification
The training attestation is issued to participants who have attended at least four of the five sessions and submitted their finalised financial model. It states the module title, the 15-hour duration, the dates and the skills acquired, and carries a unique number with a verification code.
Participants also receive:
- The financial model they built on their own project
- A three-year costed business plan template, ready to configure
- A budget and variance tracking workbook
- An investment appraisal and loan offer comparison workbook
- The complete course material in PDF, session by session
- A quick reference of Excel's financial functions
- A library of ready-to-use prompts for artificial intelligence assistants
